Vol. 1 2007 - 2008 Sept. 29, 2007 |
From The Principal's Office:
- Welcome to the many new faces on campus this year. The new school year is off to a busy start as we welcome new families and staff members to our school community. To date, CSSW has enrolled approximately 60 new students and 7 new staff members.
The new teachers are as follows: Elaine Hsiung (Nursery), Janet Lee Mancino (K), Yanping Liao (1B), Sue Liu (2A), Kuang-Hue Chin (4), Shinyu Chen (6B), and Lei Lui Takigawa (Senior).
- 2007-2008 Registration Procedures. There are still some families who are attending classes but have not yet registered or have outstanding balances (including textbook fees due) with the School Office. Please contact us so that we can complete our new school year registration procedures.
- CSSW Rules and Procedures. We recently distributed our Rules and Procedures to all families. Please observe these procedures as they are designed to ensure the safe and orderly operation of our classes. We have also distributed the most recent Master List of CSSW email addresses. Please review this document and follow the instructions accordingly.
- Emergency Contact: During Saturday school hours only, you may call the School Office at 725-1500, ext. 1523 or email info@csswny.org during the week.

Academic Activities:
- New Nursery Class. Our new Nursery Class for very young children (18 months - 3 years) is off to a good start. The class is led by Elaine Hsiung.
- Curriculum Change in the Upper School. We have initiated an important curriculum change in our 9th through 12th Grade classes to more closely follow the Chinese language courses taught in secondary and college courses throughout the United States. The students are now using new textbooks that use traditional and simplified characters and hanyu pinyin, with an emphasis on practical usage and speaking. The new material should also benefit high school students who plan to take the Chinese Language SAT II or AP tests.
- Coordination with Individual Teachers. Each language class teacher prepares a summary weekly memorandum outlining course material covered in class, the next week's homework and tests, and other important timely information. Please review this summary weekly and communicate any questions or concerns directly to the teacher. If you do not have your teacher's contact data, please come to the School Office.

Cultural Activities:
- New Cultural Classes Include a Storytelling Class led by 3A Teacher Joanie Yeh during Period 3. Our Harp class will begin on 10/13/07 when Grace Chang returns.
- Enrollment for Culture Classes are finalized during the first three weeks of the school year. Changes in course selection requires the permission of the individual class instructors. Students are required to attend the 3rd period culture classes unless other arrangements have been made with the School Office.
