Oct. 29, 2005    Vol.1   2005 - 2006

From The Principal's Office:
  • The 2005-06 school year is proceeding very smoothly. We have 35 new students this year, primarily in the PK, K and 1st grades. It is great to see so many new and young faces in the classrooms.
  • We welcome the following new teachers to our school: Ping Li (4B), Jason Chu (ping pong) and P.J. Lee (dance).
  • Our new culture class offerings for this year are ping pong (periods 1,2 and 3), dance (periods 1,2 & 3), storytelling (period 3) and arts & crafts (period 3). The period 2 classes for ping pong and dance are oriented towards adults and we encourage all interested parents to participate. We recently received a generous donation of a second ping pong table from a CSSW family who wishes to remain anonymous. We are grateful for their continuing support.
  • At our 2005 Annual Meeting, our members previously elected two new Board Directors Jean Lui and Alice Ng for a 3-year term. At our Sept. 17th Board meeting, the Board appointed Joyce Lim to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Wendi Tandlich. Joyce is a former Board member and we are fortunate that she agreed to fill the unexpected vacancy.
  • We are currently preparing the CSSW 2005-05 School Directory with a complete listing of all families and staff. Please hold on to your old copies until the new edition is available.
  • Upcoming newss:
    • 3/19/05: Organization of Chinese Americans Seminar, 11 AM
    • 4/ 2/05: CSSW Board of Directors meeting, 11 AM
    • 4/ 9/05: Photo Day
    • 4/16/05: Deadline for Yearbook submissions
    • 4/16/05: 5th Grade and above pin yin contest
Academic Activities:
  • In order to better establish the teaching of pin yin in our upper grades, we have scheduled a school-wide pin yin test for 5th Grade and above on 4/16/05. This requirement supplements our other school-wide academic newss including the Written Composition and Public Speaking Contests.
  • We welcome two new teachers to CSSW. In PK (A), Hua Chiang Hereward replaces Yoyo Liu who relocated back to Taiwan. In 7th Grade, Jean Peng replaces Wen-Qi Wu for the balance of the school year.
  • We have added an optional 3rd hour to the Kindergarten class to maintain group cohesiveness. Kindergarten Teacher Amanda Liao continues to lead the class. Individual students who wish to stay with their prior 3rd period culture class may notify the teacher.
Cultural Activities:
  • On 2/5/05, we celebrated the Year of the Rooster before a standing-room only audience. Virtually every class participated in the program. Thanks to Jerry Fu, articles about our school's New Year news were published in the 2/25 edition of Ming Pao and the 3/1 edition of World Journal.
  • Due to the departure of Yoyo Liu, the 3rd period Storytelling class has been discontinued. In addition, due to scheduling issues, the 3rd period Arts & Games class taught by Ann Lim and Joanie Yeh has been discontinued.
  • Our harp teacher Grace Chang and her students recently performed a gu-zheng at the Chinese Culture Center in New York. The concert was sponsored by the Chinese Harp Center & CSSW.
  • A photographic exhibit by our art teacher Jerry Fu (East and West: Beuaty is the Best) recently concluded at the Yonkers Public Library on Central Park Avenue
